Working Clunies on the Pillow As instructed to me by Christy Holtkamp This is how to make clunies on the pillow as opposed to gripping the bobbins in the hand and weaving them up in the air off the pillow. I will try to best explain it. It took me a few tries before I realized how to make my fingers comfortable and know the trick. |
I recommend using only nonspangled Bobbins, and preferably bobbins That have a point to them. Great for joining and weaving the clunies. Firstly, do a big "NO, NO" technique, according to some lacers who are purists. ;) I happen to do techniques that work toward my advantage. You have the 4 bobbins for making the cluny. Take one outside bobbin and make a half hitch(like in tatting) over top the other three threads.Lock this in place at the top of the junction of all three threads. This is so that none of the threads go anywhere when making the cluny. Another tip is to keep all threads short, even the weaving thread. Keep good tension on the three bobbins on the pillow. But not too tight, for you need some give to pass the weaving bobbin through. |
Leaving the bobbins on the pillow, place a finger on the head of each of the three main bobbins. Use the palm of your hand to steady the base of the bobbins. Consider your hand to be a weaving loom and the fingers will be the guides that rock the threads up and down into position. The one weaver bobbin will be like the shuttle going in and out of the passive threads. |
Leaving the two outside bobbins resting on The pillow, raise the middle bobbin with The tip of your finger. This will allow Appropriate space for the first pass of the Weaving bobbin. |
Weave the bobbin through to the other side. Raise that thread up to the top. You may have to push the thread with your finger or the tip of the bobbin into place to keep it nice. After this first pass you need to set up your fingers to make the second pass. Lower your middle bobbin and raise the two outside bobbins with your fingertips. Be sure the base of the bobbins are still being secured by the palm of your hand throughout the process. |

Continue weaving back and forth using the Up and down motion, switching middle finger to side fingers. Work to the half- way point of the cluny and then gradually tighten the tension on the weaving thread as you near the bottom to come to a point.
