    Your mystery device. I don’t know what it is called, but I believe the idea is to wind the thread around the inner piece, feeding it out through the hole in the cover, or perhaps a loop goes through. The inner piece is then slid back and forth as you make your stitches. I want to say it is a chattel or chattle, but I don’t know for certain.
